Representative Songs From My Teenage Years (1980-1987)
REM is probably one of my favorite bands of all time. I followed their entire career all the way until they broke up in 2011. This is from their very first full length album, which I bought the week it came out in 1983. People used to make fun of them because you can barely understand a word he says. He has said in interviews that there are lyrics that he, himself, doesn't know! They started off as a dark underground band and grew to be world conquerers much later.

July 2025
My friend Mike said he was listening to old REM albums. That made me want to listen to old REM albums. Unfortunately, Murmur immediately annoyed me. There are still a few good moments on this album, but I'm not so sure about it anymore.

1001Albums
Some cities have a distinctive sound, and Athens, Georgia is one of them. REM were one of the bands that defined that sound - solid bass, punchy drums, jangly guitars and laconic vocals with lyrics ranging from the esoteric to the surreal. Michael Stipe has said that he still doesn’t know what Pilgrimage is about and he wrote it. Highlight is Radio Free Europe which one of my Athens friends sent me on a mix tape of local music back in the day.
