  Building on Low, for this album Bowie added the amazing guitarist Robert Fripp, formerly of King Crimson, who brought shimmering guitar chords into the mix with his unique style. The title track was constructed from Fripp’s improvised guitar tracks, looped and combined with Eno’s synths by producer Tony Visconti. The song was almost an instrumental until Bowie caught sight of Tony Visconti with his new girlfriend standing by the Berlin Wall and was inspired to write about this striking image. As seems to be traditional with Bowie’s best work, the single didn’t do particularly well on first release and was only recognised as a classic in retrospect.
