  Wild Love is Bill Callahan’s SMOG project sounding like a fully formed world rather than a collection of lo-fi experiments. The songs are skeletal, strange, and often deliberately uncomfortable, with guitars that seem to hang in the air rather than accompany traditional melodies. Callahan’s deadpan delivery gives even the most bizarre observations an unsettling emotional weight. There’s a primitive beauty to the record hiding underneath all the murk and irony. It can feel abrasive on first listen, yet its peculiar rhythms and off-kilter songwriting become addictive. Wild Love is SMOG at its most alienating and fascinating.
