Is it too soon to call this the "What's Going On" of our time? Probably but nevertheless this is a truly amazing piece of political art...
"To say the album is all over the place musically is both understatement and compliment. The opening song “Travel”, with its mixture of avant garde vocal patterns and Middle Eastern scales, hints at the journey the listener is about to take. From the heavy bass of the Fela Kuti-like “Pride II” to Jebin Bruni’s driving piano on “Eyes”, which also features a mellifluous vocal from Hicks – reminiscent of the late Jeff Buckley without being overtly derivative – we never know where we might land on the musical map. No More Water: The Gospel Of James Baldwin is revolutionary fire music – but it’s also a celebration, a party held in honour of a man who did so much, expecting nothing in return.
