  Emeralds is the 2011 instrumental dreampop masterpiece from one of the originators of the sound, Cocteau Twins guitarist Robin Guthrie. Oozing with emotion that swells and colors the edges, the album presents the affective power that can exist in the absence of vocals. The stories are well-presented, even without lyrics to guide the listener. There are moments of heatbreaking beauty and also passages to calm the soul. Guthrie's inability to play the standard guitar game infuses his work with a kind of other-worldly splendor.

  Guthrie just rereleased Emeralds and his 2009 album Carousel on CD and, judging by the availability of his other releases, it looks like they will sell out quickly.
