Knock Knock is arguably the record where Bill Callahan stops merely sounding like an eccentric lo-fi cult figure and starts sounding like a great songwriter. The production is considerably more expansive, but the songs retain the uncomfortable intimacy that defines SMOG. “Hit the Ground” and “No Dancing” are deceptively catchy, while “Held” and “Cold Blooded Old Times” expose a more vulnerable side of Callahan’s writing. His lyrics can still be hilarious, cruel, and bizarre within the same verse, but there is a growing sense of emotional precision underneath the deadpan delivery. Knock Knock is one of SMOG’s most accessible albums without being remotely conventional.
