    Rotate!

    Robert Rackley

I heard about Blind Mr. Jones back in the 90s, but never paid much attention to them because of their name. The moniker struck me as befitting one of the Clear Channel pop rock bands that were floating around in those days.

It wasn't until this morning, when Roon stuck not one, but several of the tracks on this album in my rotation, that I began to pay attention. The shoegaze sounds on this record sound familiar, but that's only because this album from 1994, among others, made them popular. Even if you've been aware of the shoegaze explosion of the last few years (and it's hard not to have been), you will find some clever suprises here. "Surfer Baby," with it's sly reference to the Beach Boys "I Get Around," wrapped in serpentine guitar lines is impressive. "Disney World" presages the obsessive Disney princess that would only become more prevalent in the recent years.

After listening to this, I'm planning to check out the band's debut, Stereo Musicale, which has drawn comparisons to Slowdive (never a bad thing).
