This was almost all I listened to for a month or so early in the year. It's such a weird mix of improvisation, ambient, and instrumental composition. I think it's amazing. I heard about it from an interview with Rick Ruben. He said it was "thrilling", so I had to see what he meant. I don't know if Thrilling is the word I would use, but I really liked it a lot.

Kind of almost jazzy mellow piano and guitar

I heard Rick Rubin taking about this album a couple of months ago. He called it "thrilling" so I figured I'd check it out. It's Nils Frahm and another guy I'm not familiar with. They are improvising over themes. I have now listened to it probably 30 times. I keep discovering tracks and sections that I hadn't noticed before.
