  Pollard's first proper solo album feels less like a departure from Guided by Voices than an alternate version of the band. Working with Ric Ocasek, he creates a record filled with bright melodies, odd structures, and some unusually lush arrangements. Songs like "Subspace Biographies" showcase his ability to write hooks that sound familiar and strange at the same time. The album's dreamlike sequencing gives it a unique personality within his catalog. It remains one of the strongest non-GBV releases he ever made.
