One of the hidden gems from Pollard's impossibly productive 2012, Jack Sells the Cow showcases a songwriter operating almost entirely on instinct. The album is packed with concise melodies, odd lyrical fragments, and the sort of effortless hooks that Pollard can seemingly generate at will. Compared to some of his larger, more sprawling solo statements, the record feels focused and surprisingly cohesive, with a warm, guitar-driven sound that recalls aspects of late-period Guided by Voices without directly imitating it. Todd Tobias' production provides clarity while preserving the slightly dreamlike atmosphere that runs throughout the album. There are no grand conceptual ambitions here—just a master craftsman turning out one strong song after another. Like many of Pollard's best lesser-known releases, it rewards repeated listening by revealing how much care and melodic invention lies beneath its casual surface.
