Mag Earwhig! finds Robert Pollard rebuilding Guided by Voices after the departure of much of the classic lineup, and the result is one of the most focused albums of his career. Backed by musicians who could fully realize his arena-rock ambitions, Pollard delivers some of his biggest hooks on songs like "I Am a Tree" and "Bulldog Skin." The production is cleaner and heavier than earlier GBV records, but the songwriting remains unmistakably his. The album balances power-pop immediacy with flashes of surrealism and emotional ambiguity. It's the bridge between the lo-fi classics and Pollard's more polished late-'90s work.
