  Normal Happiness finds Pollard embracing a somewhat more direct and accessible songwriting style. The melodies are plentiful, and the performances feel relaxed without becoming casual. While it lacks the grand ambition of From a Compound Eye, it succeeds through consistency and charm. The album's best songs rank among the strongest of his solo career. It's a deceptively rich record.
