Released during the extraordinarily fertile period that followed Guided by Voices' initial breakup, We All Got Out of the Army is one of Robert Pollard's strongest and most complete solo albums. Working with longtime collaborator Todd Tobias, Pollard balances concise power-pop hooks with a more expansive and atmospheric approach than he often employed in GBV. Songs like "Maggie Turns to Flies" and "Little Hands" rank among the finest of his solo career, combining emotional resonance with his trademark surreal imagery. The production gives the album a cohesive, almost cinematic quality without sacrificing spontaneity. Unlike some Pollard releases that thrive on fragmentation, this record unfolds with unusual focus and momentum. It's a compelling argument that his post-GBV solo work deserves to be discussed alongside many of the best albums released under the Guided by Voices name.
