The Doctor Came at Dawn is one of the darkest and most psychologically claustrophobic albums in the SMOG catalog. Callahan strips the music down to its barest elements, creating songs that feel less performed than whispered directly into the listener’s ear. The arrangements are sparse but not empty, with every guitar note and vocal inflection carrying an almost uncomfortable amount of weight. His writing moves between cruelty, vulnerability, sex, loneliness, and absurdity without ever telling you exactly how to feel about any of it. The album’s bleakness is occasionally almost funny, but the humor only makes the sadness feel more real. It’s a difficult, intimate record that rewards listeners willing to sit with its darkness.
