  After seeing Pathogen live last week, I have been listening to a bit more tech death than usual the past few days, and so I was interested when this album when it came up in last week’s new releases list. Hypaethral is a Kansas City band, and Odyssean looks to be their second full-length.

  I will say that I wish I liked this album; there is a lot of good stuff about it. Unfortunately, I hate hate HATE the drumming. It’s not that the drummer is bad (seems quite talented, in fact), but rather that the constant tappity-tap-tap of the snare is one of my pet peeves. I can’t stand it, and it immediately puts me off any album the second that it kicks in.

  So far, I’ve been able to make it through three, maybe four tracks. I don’t think I’m going to make it much farther. If the drumming isn’t a thing for you and you like technical death metal, Odyssean is probably worth a listen.
