Top of all Time

A list of my all-time favorite releases, each packed with a high density of musical ideas. Whether it’s metal, classical, or progressive rock, they all showcase incredible production, songwriting, and technical skill. Their lyrical intent resonates with me, and every listen reveals something new, making them truly unforgettable!

  1. Redneck Viking From Hell is a brilliant mix of cinematic layers under extreme metal and catchy melodies.

  2. Gojira at their best. Arguably. Known for its intricate guitar work, resonant bass, and expressive vocals. For fans that like crushing riffs and rhythms with melodic and atmospheric passages. A must listen.

  3. Schammasch

Schammasch’s "Triangle" traverses from dense black metal and doomy atmospheres to avant-garde, progressive elements with both harsh and clean vocals. A challenging yet immersive and thought-provoking journey.

  4. Electric Light Orchestra

The album departs from ELO’s orchestral rock roots, adding synthesizers and electronic sounds while incorporating elements of new wave, and rockabilly. It is a masterpiece of conceptual writing, catchy melodies, upbeat rhythms, and imaginative production.

  5. The Ocean Collective’s "Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic" is a progressive post-metal album that blends dynamic heaviness with atmospheric depth and intricate musicianship. It has Eastern-influenced motifs and includes orchestral and electronic elements.

  6. Edge Of Sanity

A monumental progressive death metal opus consisting of a single, continuous 40-minute track. It masterfully blends melodic death metal riffs with sprawling, cinematic passages and introspective moments. Dynamic shifts, emotional guitar solos, and a mix of harsh and clean vocals.

  7. The record balances avant-garde with heavy, blackened passages and bright, Hungarian folk motifs and atmospheric interludes, featuring a wide array of instruments and guest vocalists. Richly layered and eclectic album.

  8. Cattle Decapitation

Death Atlas combines technical riffs, tempo shifts, and complex arrangements with haunting atmospheric interludes. The album’s conceptual depth and powerful emotional intensity make it such a great album. Misanthropic and nihilistic progressive death metal.

  9. Fleshgod Apocalypse

"King" merges symphonic grandeur with brutal death metal in a richly orchestrated experience. The album features intricate compositions with a mix of (really) fast riffs and operatic interludes, highlighted by powerful clean vocals and classical (and orchestral soundtrack) influences.

  10. Humanity's Last Breath

Välde is an intense and technically impressive deathcore album that melds crushing brutality with progressive elements. It features complex guitar work, blast beats, and guttural vocals balanced by moments of atmospheric and melodic subtlety.

  11. This underrated masterpiece is an epic and densely layered progressive metal album that combines symphonic grandeur with folk, black, and death metal influences. The record features expansive, intricate compositions filled with both heavy and melodic passages, poetic interludes, and powerful clean and harsh vocals. It's a trip you don't want to miss out on.

  12. Igorrr

Igorrr’s "Amen" is a wild, boundary-shattering blend of extreme metal, breakcore, and avant-garde experimentation. The album fuses chaotic blast beats, operatic choirs, and eclectic world music influences with dense electronic soundscapes. It's aggressive. It's weird. It's totally to my liking.

  13. Rivers of Nihil

Where Owls Know My Name incorporates melodic guitar work, jazzy saxophone passages, and ambient textures alongside brutal riffs and dynamic (harsh and clean) vocals. It's a journey that balances heaviness with melodic sophistication and innovative instrumentation.

  14. Blood Incantation

A masterful blend of cosmic progressive death metal, mixing dense, technical riffs with synths and spacey, Pink Floyd-ish textures. There's nothing on this album not to like.

  15. This continues their signature blend of cinematic symphonic power metal with a humorous, over-the-top theatrical story. The album features energetic, catchy choruses and fast-paced, intricate instrumentation. An underrated album.

  16. "Battle Ballads" leans into straightforward, anthemic folk metal with catchy songs and powerful choruses. The album balances energetic, melodic tracks with atmospheric moments rooted in Faroese heritage, featuring occasional symphonic touches.

  17. Borknagar

Borknagar’s "Fall" album blends progressive and black metal with both clean and harsh vocals in a careful balance. The sound is less aggressive than previous records and leans into thoughtful songwriting and rich atmosphere. It features multi-layered arrangements and balances moments of darkness with hopeful, anthem-like sections.

  18. Misplaced Childhood is a cornerstone of neo-progressive rock, built as a cohesive concept album with flowing transitions between tracks. It blends lush melodies, atmospheric keyboards, and emotional guitar work with poetic lyrics. The record balances moments of grandeur and intimacy, delivering a dreamlike yet deeply personal journey. It might be my most favorite album of all time.
