Seven Songs for the Week #103 - 26th Mar 25

John Grant, Sinéad O'Connor
It's been a long standing domestic issue that what began last May bank holiday as a piece of work to renovate our front and back rooms seems to be nearly over as floors went down. It meant I could reassemble the record player and listening space and the first record I grabbed off the pile was John Grant's Pale Green Ghosts, an album I loved when it came out and haven't listened to in years. It still stands up, but the first half is excellent and the second half is just very good. The first time I heard GMF was in concert and it was a hoot.

Gilbert O'Sullivan
I heard this in a doctor's waiting room, which was a very cheery location.

Sonic Youth, Kim Deal
Kim Deal and Kim Gordon were both musical guests on Everybody's Live with John Mulaney this week. After opening the show with a solo song each, they closed the show performing this Sonic Youth track which was unknown to me.
-
Bob Mould
Still getting to grips with Bob's new album but it is very good. This track stood out.
-
The Beta Band
I went to see the band Tunng in concert last week, on a 20th anniversary jaunt and I have to admit that I knew none of their songs going in (a friend had suggested going). It was a good show, but it got me thinking of what could only be described as "turn of the millennium wonky music" and The Beta Band are back! Reunion shows performing The 3 EPs in full later this year. Hot Shots II was always my preferred BB record, and this song is a standout.
-
Split Enz
I got into the car the other day and the DJ was introducing Message to my Girl by Split Enz, a song I have never heard on the radio, ever. One Step Ahead fits this playlist's vibe a bit better.
