Seven Songs for the Week #116 - 25th June 25

  1. Shirley Bassey

All hail the algorithm. Last week I mentioned how I enjoyed hearing songs that have well-known samples in their original state. This week my "radio" station on Apple Music played me this which was sampled by Public Enemy in 2007's Harder Than You Think.

  2. The Flaming Lips

I had my eye on the 2022 6CD box set and found a versions going for €10 second hand. I'd forgotten how much I liked this at the time. The curse of CDs though is I don't think I listened past Do You Realise?!

  3. The Natural History

Found out that the Spoon song, Don't You Evah was not actually a Spoon song and this is the original. It's not as good though.

  4. Roxy Music

Listened to the Roxy debut this week, which in my head has Virginia Plain on it. Then I heard it on the radio. The coincidence!

  5. I need to listen to this album a bit more. It's quite good actually.

  6. The Rolling Stones

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

  7. Public Enemy

Separate to the Shirley Bassey track above, I was flicking though the tv and saw a "Biggest Scandals of 1988" thing on, and they were talking about Gangsta Rap. I had to explain to the teen who NWA were, and then off we went on a mini YouTube rabbit hole, including this song. I'm such a trendy dad.
