Seven Songs for the Week #131

  1. Robert Palmer

I was listening to this song in the car last week and asking myself whether or not it was the greatest song of all time. I mean, it still sounds great, it's funny, preposterous, swaggering, catchy, groovy... Robert Palmer was 39 when he got this song to number two in the US charts in 1988 - we are quite far away from something like that happening in 2025. A 40 year old placing a rock song at the top of the charts? Nope. Also, there was a Pepsi ad that went with the song, again, totally normal for 1988. https://youtu.be/2v7dD4LNY48

Anyways, having blasted the song in the car, imagine my surprise, dear reader, when Simply Irresistible opened up the first episode of the new series of Slow Horses - thus proving my point that it's the greatest song of all time.

  2. Found this curious compilation of latter-day Holland/Dozier/Holland on streaming and skimmed through it. This song stood out.

  3. Dolly Parton

Hadn't heard this before this week, it got played on The Current and it's an excellent piece of Dolly.

  4. James Yorkston, Nina Persson

James Yorkston and Nina Persson played this on Later...with Jools Holland over the weekend and thought it was rather lovely. Must listen to the whole album.

  5. Billy Joel

The recent And So It Goes documentary streaming boxset has an instrumental take of James. on it, but whether it's microphone leakage or dodgy AI mixing, you can still faintly hear Billy singing in the background. Here's the main event, I like to think of it as the precursor song to Vienna.

  6. Loretta Lynn

Do you, like me, enjoy reading old copies of Billboard? I saw an ad for this song in a 1975 edition and wondered was it about, you know, contraception. It is!

  7. Marie Davidson, Soulwax

Another tv show sync track this week, from Apple's The Morning Show. Soulwax have a new album about to come out.
