Seven Songs for the Week #146 - 21st Jan 26

  1. They Might Be Giants

TMBG, 40 years on from their debut album, are back. At what point do they get the kudos, like how the tide turned for Sparks about 20 years ago. The Eyeball EP is three songs and a remix release ahead of a full new album (tba) and none of the EP tracks will be on the LP apparently. I prefer the remix of the title track, it has a certain colour. Or color, if you're that way inclined.

  2. David Bowie

Listened to Station To Station this week. I think it's his best album. Still sounds lovely, it sits outside any particular genre and is just a Bowie record, in some ways. How do you write a song like Golden Years, it's so fluid, it's a groove. Bowie wouldn't know as he said he remembers nothing about recording Station To Station.

  3. Kraftwerk

Which album has the widest ratio between the a-side and the b-side in terms of plays? Tubular Bells might be up there. So is Autobahn. I'm currently reading Future Music From Germany, a KW bio and like any good bio you head back to the records. Side 1 is so familiar, the ongoing sound of the future. Side 2, much less so. When the bright open melody of Kometenmelodie 2 ("`Comet Melody") opens up, it's a great sensation.

  4. A$AP Rocky

New music from As Soon As Possible Rocky. He did this on SNL this week and for some reason he had a rhythm section of Danny Elfman and Thundercat miming badly. Good song.

  5. Emmylou Harris

Went to see Emmylou play in Dublin this week. To be honest, I don't really know her songs, I know her, but she doesn't really have a classic signature tune. Still though, she had managed to sell a significant number of tickets in the 13,000 capacity 3Arena, which surprised her. It's fun going to a gig where you don't know what to expect. I enjoyed this song.

  6. Charli xcx

    New Charli, new danger.

  7. King Crimson

This popped up on Apple Music this week. Great opening riff. Apparently the lyric "Cigarettes, ice cream, figurines of the Virgin Mary" is the only KC lyric Robert Fripp ever wrote.
