Seven Songs for the Week #177

Looking for something to listen to this week I found the 1990 Scott compilation Boy Child, bought by herself, and filed away. It did the trick. This still sounds fantastic, crystal clear. There was a moment towards the end of the 1990s when this sound was around a lot.

I saw Fontaines DC at a festival last year and they ended with Favourite. It struck me that they needed more pop in their step. Think of The Cure: they have 6-8 pop bangers that they can drop to deliver all the heavier stuff. Fontaines should do more of that. This song is good.

Reorganising CDs this week, this has been on the shelf for over two decades and never listened to. Bought at some point because Wondermints were Brian Wilson’s backing band for an age, so the album is obviously Beach Boys-y. Had an existential crisis listening to it wondering if I would ever listen to it again - maybe not. This is the song that stuck.

Lovely track from the upcoming beabadoobee album. Captures the feeling of being young and living the formative.

New Florence Road. They have been working hard the past year, working their way up the bill. Irish headlining tour in December. Is 2027 the big global storm?

I first noticed this album from its cover - I liked the 1982 airport novel aesthetic. Turns out it’s Sturgill Simpson in disguise, which was more interesting to me than an actual Sturgill Simpson album. I do enjoy a good alter ego. I can only apologise for the title, and some of the lyrics, but I like the vibe.

A box set and Atmos Blu-ray of this album has been announced. Although I have owned this album for many many years, I can’t claim any deep familiarity with it. Looking at the tracklisting I couldn’t remember much beyond the big three (Do The Strand, Editions of You, In Every Dreamhome...) so I’ve given it some spins and it’s rather good, isn’t it? Especially this track, doing its thing for over 9 minutes. The Atmos could turn out to be something special, so I think I’ll get that.
