Seven Songs for the Week #178

Fiona Apple
Watched Lucky on AppleTV. It’s...fine. Passible time killing tv, but nowhere near as good as it thinks it is. Some hammy acting, but whatever. It does have this excellent new song by Fiona Apple.

ADÉLA
OK, so I was at the Electric Picnic Festival last weekend as a “performer” (appearing on a podcast). Alongside the headliners Gorillaz and CMAT, I saw a few others. ADÉLA is about to “drop” her debut album “Pre-save that shit” she told the audience leaving the stage. I liked this song that she opened with.
-
Van Morrison
Van Morrison was the 4pm Sunday afternoon legend. One hour slot. I was happy that he played this because Avalon Sunset was one of those albums in 1989 that just seemed to appear in cars and houses and got played a lot.
-
Geese
Highlight of EP for me was Geese. Loving attentive young crowd, singing along, moshing. They are so good, playing and stretching the songs from Getting Killed. Phenomenal drummer.
-
Audrey Hobert
First act I saw this weekend was Audrey Hobert. She began her show wearing 10 foot trench coat while standing on a hidden step ladder while wearing a set of comedy glasses/nose/moustache (like Steve Martin) and playing a Uke. That’s a good way to get going. At one point in her set, her cousin wandered on stage and they started beating each other up. That was also fun. This is her current hit, as in, it’s on the charts.

Fleetwood Mac
While stuck in a tent sponsored by Coca-Cola during one of the intermittent explosive downpours at EP, this song started blasting out of the speakers. The pseudophillysoul really suits Christine McVie. I mean, Fleetwood Mac were doing absolutely fine until Buckingham Nicks ruined everything.

The Monkees
Throughout 2026 I have been re-watching Breaking Bad with the teenager. It’s even better than I remember. What I hadn’t remembered is that one of my favourite Monkees songs appears in Season Five, so I was quite delighted when that scene happened.
