Seven Songs for the Week #71 - 14th Aug 24

  1. Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass

Is this the happiest piece of music? There joy here. I've listened to this about 20 times this week. I was listening to The Lonely Island Seth Meyers Podcast and they were discussing this sketch [ https://archive.org/embed/snl-s-32-e-16-peyton-manning-will-forte-locker-room-dance ] which led me back to the song - oh I guess this is a spoiler for the sketch.

  2. Bought a good number of CDs in charity shops this week, including this album by The Strokes. The Strokes are great when they do their thing, so here they are doing it.

  3. Spoon pop up often on these playlists, I saw this mentioned in a discussion about when a band's best song is also really short. This track is immaculately short.

  4. The Everly Brothers

I'd never heard this before. Someone online said it sounded like While My Guitar Gently Weeps, even though it's from 1967. Not sure about that. But it's very good.

  5. The Monkees

An incredible song. Good Times came out in 2016 and is a triumph of an album - whoodathunk that The Monkeys would put out one of their best records 60 years into their career. It's hard to believe that three of the main players in this record, Peter, New and Adam Schlesinger, are now gone.

  6. The Band, Joni Mitchell

Another Joni archives box was announced this week with a live version of Coyote as the trailer track. This version was my introduction to Joni and this song.

  7. The Little Boy Blues

No spoilers but here's another late 60s psych groove which midway though reveals itself as the source of a hiphop sample that's currently in an ad. See if you recognise it.
