Seven Songs for the Week #96 - 5th Feb 24

  1. I am fond of The Lonely Island, they have featured before on these lists. This is the opening track from their debut album which was discussed on The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast this week. Enough time has passed so that people can consider the "late naughties comedy scene" on podcasts and such.

  2. The return of Sparks this week ahead of album 28, MAD!, due out later in 2025. Not groundbreaking on its own, but Ron Mael will be 80 soon so we should enjoy every moment in their company. The video is excellent.

  3. Steely Dan

I had a lot of driving this week, and listened to Countdown to Ecstacy twice. Maybe it's their best one? I've always been a Gaucho man myself.

  4. Alice Coltrane

The question was asked on the Steely Dan subreddit "what is a song that sounds like Bodhisattva?" and this track got a lot of upvotes. Not sure I hear it myself, but here it is anyways.

  5. Turned on the radio this week and this song was playing. There's never a bad time to hear this track.

  6. Islands

    Shazamed this in a shop!

  7. Philip Glass, Philip Glass Ensemble, Michael Riesman

February 2025 is the official Saturday Night Live is 50 celebration month. There is a lot of stuff out there: four different documentaries about aspects of the show's production, an upcoming 3 hour primetime special, a 50th anniversary show in Radio City and on NBC last week was a Questlove film about 50 Years of Music on SNL. Expertly put together it told new and old stories. Watched it with the eldest teen and they were riveted. It's worth seeking out the opening mix alone. One of the curveballs was the 1986 episode where Philip Glass was the musical guest, performing this song. The episode that it came from was one of the few SNLs where they ditched the weekly formula and instead had a show directed by the actual Francis Ford Coppola. This episode was covered in a separate documentary about SNL's "weird" 11th season. Try to keep up.
