My Favorite Nocturnal Sophisti-Pop Albums
3 A.M. angst, but in a classy way. Grab those pricey headphones, a pack of smokes and your favorite whiskey. Audiophiles are in the right place.

The Blue Nile
The pinnacle of the sophisti-pop era. Almost 40 years on, its atmospheric depiction of lost souls wandering through the rain-soaked nightlife still resonates. If you're a fan of The Paper Kites, you'll enjoy this.
Favorite track: "Headlights on the Parade"

Donald Fagen
Classic Steely Dan's trademark cynicism mixed with lively jazz pop tunes. It's almost like listening to a 1950s pop radio station that hasn't caught up with the 80s yet.
Favorite track: "Ruby Baby"

Love & Money
Imagine the polished sound of The Nightfly combined with the Scottish pushback against Thatcherism. This album holds some of the smoothest tracks in the genre. The world is just starting to rediscover this hidden gem.
Favorite track: " Walk the Last Mile"

The Style Council
Paul "The Modfather" Weller totally ditches his punk rock persona with this joyful, jazzy shift to soul and R&B. What really makes this album shine is Mick Talbot's incredible piano skills. It's an amazing debut that deserves a spot in every music lover's collection.
Favorite track: "My Ever Changing Moods"

Joe Jackson
Joe Jackson's standout work. It's a vibrant blend of progressive pop, new wave, salsa, and mutant disco (and yes, that's an actual music genre). The title "Night and Day" even hints that the album unfolds over one night, with each track flowing smoothly into the next.
Favorite track: "Steppin' Out"

Prefab Sprout
This is what you call a headphone album. Every synth is carefully positioned. Every vocal hits the mark. The matter-of-fact lyrics capture the ups and downs of love in a way that's still unmatched. Without a doubt, it's Prefab Sprout's finest hour.
Favorite track: "Appetite"

The Paper Kites
This album really gives off a vibe similar to Hats by The Blue Nile. You can still feel that same melancholic longing, but the lyrics have become more clear and hopeful. The Paper Kites have grown from a more subdued indie band and have definitely found their place on the current wave of 80s pop-rock nostalgia. Petty and Springsteen fans rejoice. There's a lot for you here.
Favorite track: "Give Me Your Fire, Give Me Your Rain"

unknown artist
Self-Titled, by The Lover Speaks.
It's really surprising that most music fans totally overlooked this one in the 1980s. Some of the catchiest pop songs ever made are included here. David Freeman's deep vocals paired with thought-provoking lyrics are backed by upbeat synth tunes, but the slower tracks have this nostalgic vibe that makes them ideal for late-night listening. The album's so hard to find that this YouTube link will do.
Favorite track: "Never To Forget You"
