Best of 2025

My 20 favourite albums released in 2025

  1. Artificial Go

Circles was my most irresistible earworm of the year.

  2. Big Thief

Not as colossal as the last one but still lovely.

  3. Bitchin Bajas

    Dreamy instrumentals.

  4. The Burning Hell

Another good one from the witty Canadian indie-popsters. See them if you can!

  5. Discovered his previous record at the start of the year, saw him play to about 20 people in the middle, and by the end he was a big star!

  6. Richard Dawson

You know when you just want to be someone's friend?

  7. There are lots of Big Feelings about these guys in both directions. I just enjoyed it!

  8. Haley Heynderickx, Max García Conover

    Channelling Woody Guthrie and Dylan/Baez.

  9. They were a little dull live, but I love the record - 2468 is a bop.

  10. The Illness

This obscure indie band from York have somehow got David Pajo on this record and West/Nastanovich on a previous one.

  11. Billie Marten

Just a really pretty folky singer-songwriter record.

  12. Maruja

Righteous anger and saxophones combine well.

  13. Lael Neale

Loving the Velvets-y drone, sad I missed out on seeing her live.

  14. Mei Semones

Ridiculously talented (and young) guitarist blending indie with bossa nova.

  15. Modern Nature

Island of Noise is one of my favourite of the 2020s, and this is almost as good.

  16. The Necks

Each track is album-length on its own, but this is the one that's best captured their mesmeric live show for me.

  17. Pulp

More than we expected, more than we deserved.

  18. quatermass 3

A rocking great time from some veteran post-punkers.

  19. Red River Dialect

Not sure how I haven't come across them before, nice Bill Callahan vibes.

  20. Alan Sparhawk

I really enjoyed his vocoder-fucked freak-out too, but this is stunning.
