2021 Top Ten

Japanese Breakfast
Her previous albums are ok, but this one blows them out of the water. I feel like her songwriting is at another level here. A perfect 10 songs on this album. Live show = amazing.

Tune-Yards
I liked Tune-Yards, but never considered myself a huge fan. This album turned me around. They're super inventive on this one. Listened to this one A LOT. They also put together some great livestreams where they played these songs live. Wow. Blew me away.

Liam Kazar
What a great debut album! Part of the Wilco-verse as Liam plays bass on Jeff Tweedy's solo work. I was onboard after hearing those first two singles (and great videos!). Soulful and retro.

Bruno Mars, Silk Sonic, Anderson .Paak
Wasn't expecting this. Fun, funky, and only 29 minutes? I'm in.
-
St. Vincent
St. Vincent never disappoints. I feel like she got a lot of bad reviews for this album, but I think it's inventive and dark, which scratched that itch.
-
Courtney Barnett
I'm a sucker for anything Courtney Barnett releases. And yep, she did it again.
-
Modest Mouse
Been a MM fan since the beginning, but their last few didn't do it for me. I was pleasantly surprised by this one. It's no "Lonesome Crowded West", but it's still got that old school MM vibe.
-
My Morning Jacket
I fell off of MMJ after "Z" in 2005. Then someone turned me onto "The Waterfall II" in 2020, and I loved it. They come out with this one a year later and wow! They keep re-inventing their sound. Lots more synths on this one. Great stuff!

Arlo Parks
I feel like you couldn't go anywhere in 2021 without hearing a couple of these songs. So catchy and easy going. Jazzy and smooth. Love it.

Julie Doiron
Not sure where I heard this, but I liked her 2009 album "I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day", so I'm guessing when I saw she put out a new album, I was intrigued. Equal parts melodic and sweet, but kinda gritty at the same time. Check it out. You'll see what I mean.
