Basinski recorded decaying tape loops as they literally fell apart during playback, turning physical deterioration into the subject of the music itself. The resulting pieces are haunting, beautiful, and unexpectedly emotional. What begins as repetition gradually becomes a meditation on memory, loss, and impermanence. Few experimental works communicate so directly.
