JamesMitski strips away much of the sharper irony of her earlier work and leans into emotional openness here. The arrangements draw from folk, country, orchestral pop, and ambient textures, giving songs like “Bug Like an Angel” and “My Love Mine All Mine” unusual warmth and space. Her writing remains highly controlled and precise, capable of making loneliness feel both deeply personal and strangely universal. The album’s pacing is especially impressive — quiet moments are given room to linger rather than being rushed toward climax. It feels emotionally exhausted but still searching for connection. The restraint makes the album hit harder.

About this album: The latest full-length release from the classically trained Mitsuki Miyawaki (SUNY Purchase College's Conservatory of Music), recorded in Nashville and Los Angeles by producer Patrick Hyland. Includes an orchestra arranged and conducted by Drew Erickson and a 17-person choir. The album is influenced by spaghetti Western soundtracks, as well as the works of Arthur Russell, Igor Stravinsky, Scott Walker, Caetano Veloso and Faron Young, and Terry Riley.

Best New To Me Of 2023
stumpnuggetMitski has always gotten rave reviews and, frankly, I have never really understood what the fuss was all about. But this album converted me. This is a great record! It is a little more acoustic and a little more earthy than her previous work. Maybe that's what finally spoke to me. I love every song on this album.
