Belle and Sebastian first came to my attention when The Boy With The Arab Strap was released. By that time, they already had one highly regarded album out, but music hype traveled slowly in the early internet days (and you had to buy music to even give it a listen). I was told they were a band I would like, but my sisters would probably like them more. I did quite enjoy their second album. At the time, not much was known about the Scottish group. They seemed reticent about publicity, had mysterious monochromatic album covers and weren’t even aware of the musicians with which they were gaining comparisons (like Nick Drake).

By the time Dear Catastrophe Waitress was released in 2003, the band had enough exposure to have lost some of the mystery that carried them in the early days but were getting more adapt at writing fantastic pop songs. The highly problematic “Step Into My Office, Baby,” “I’m a Cuckoo’s” use of the “Boys Are Back In Town” riff and the playful urgency of “If You Find Yourself Caught In Love” all showcase a band at the peak of their powers.
