Decemberists, but with Squirrel Nut Zippers horns at times. Every song is "normal" length…and then we get to the 70's prog rock closer.

June 2024 - Albums I have listened to
I'm not quite sure what to make of this album just yet.
In the first listen, I was not terribly impressed. "It sounds like every other Decemberists album," I said to myself after three or four tracks in. However, that might just be because Colin Meloy always sounds like Colin Meloy.
I listened to the album again yesterday and this morning and I like it a little better. Most bands tend to get pegged to a particular era and I think the Decemberists have really just never escaped that early- to mid-2000s sound. Their particular brand of chamber pop is really of its era. That is not necessarily bad but I think it can sound a bit precious these days.
Obviously, I am pretty ambivalent on this album. It is better than I originally thought but I don't think it will stay in any rotation for me. The Crane Wife remains my favorite Decemberists album; the tracks I like best on this one remind me of that album so I would probably be inclined to just listen to that one.
