  A River Ain’t Too Much to Love is the final great SMOG album and one of Callahan’s most understated masterpieces. The record feels earthy and spacious, built around acoustic guitars, restrained arrangements, and his increasingly authoritative baritone. There is a sense of nature and physical space running through the album, but the songs remain intensely personal and psychologically strange. “Drinking at the Dam” and “Say Valley Maker” show Callahan at his most reflective, while the title track feels almost mythic in its simplicity. Nothing is overstated, yet nearly every song carries the weight of a much larger story. It’s a beautiful culmination of the SMOG project: austere, mysterious, funny, lonely, and human.
