    • Root Genre: Soul / R&B
    • Primary Branch: Neo-Soul / Contemporary Soul
    • Secondary Influences: Jazz-Soul, Gospel, Reggae, Quiet Storm
    • Textural Identity: Warm, intimate and understated — soft Rhodes, rounded bass, restrained drums, gentle guitar and close-miked vocals with a distinctly analogue feel
    • Energy Axis: Low → Medium (mostly calm and unhurried, with groove and emotional lift rather than big dynamic peaks)

Rose in the Dark is very clearly rooted in Soul / R&B, with Neo-Soul / Contemporary Soul as the most useful branch. Cleo Sol’s voice is the center of gravity, but the production is deliberately economical: warm keys, dry drums, bass-led grooves and a lot of negative space. That same aesthetic connects naturally to SAULT, with Inflo’s production giving the album a similarly restrained, groove-conscious character.

There is also a gentle jazz-soul sensibility in the chord language and instrumentation, while some tracks bring in traces of reggae and gospel without ever leaving the album’s core soul identity.

Small review: Rose in the Dark is a beautifully unforced record. “Why Don’t You” is probably the clearest example of its appeal: an extremely simple groove, a gorgeous bass line and Cleo Sol singing with almost no need to oversell the emotion. “When I’m in Your Arms” is warmer and more romantic, while “Her Light” leans toward a slightly more spiritual register. The production is so restrained that the album can initially seem modest, but repeated listens reveal how carefully every part has been placed. It is modern soul built around warmth, space and vocal presence rather than spectacle.

    Collection shorthand: Soul / R&B → Neo-Soul / Contemporary Soul.
