  My Days of 58 captures Bill Callahan in transition, still connected to the strange, austere world of Smog while moving toward the more expansive songwriting that would define his later work. The songs are skeletal and occasionally abrasive, but there’s a surprising amount of warmth hiding beneath the bleakness. Callahan’s voice gives even the most cryptic lyrics an almost conversational authority. The record feels less polished than his later albums, which makes its intimacy and oddness particularly compelling. There’s a sense of someone experimenting with how much he can leave unsaid while still making a song emotionally land. It’s an understated but fascinating entry in the evolution from Smog to Bill Callahan.

  Beanis

  This Texan folk artist has eluded me up until now, but I'm glad his music finally reached me. Very laid back, straight forward, and blunt in both its sound and lyricism. A simple affair with warm and cozy instrumentation, and a satisfyingly deep male voice that keeps the album very grounded and real. Some very vulnerable lyrics as well.

  Quite an easy listen, and its one hour runtime flies by.
