2024: Some Favs
In no particular order.
-
Julie Christmas
Album of the year? Album of the year. The fact that it's not on more lists out there in the world is such an oversight. Oh sure, it's metal, but it's perfect metal, top to bottom. There is no voice like hers.
-
Chelsea Wolfe
Real close runner-up here. Real close. I've liked Wolfe for a while now in a general "yeah she's good" kind of way, but I got locked in hard on this one. Perfect winter music.
-
Hinds
I know it came out in September but “Boom Boom Back” was the retroactive song of the summer.
-
Kelly Moran
My love affair with this album may have been brief but it was extremely intense.
-
Waxahatchee
I've liked Waxahatchee for a while but this year she finally clicked really into place for me and then there was a new album and it was great.
-
Flower Face
I feel borderline self-parodying putting this perfect little slice of sad-girl music on my list. But. (I mean, "Skeleton Key," come on.)
-
Sour Widows
A bit of a magnet—I kept getting pulled back to it without realizing how strong the attraction was.
-
Nilüfer Yanya
This surprised me, considering the first couple times I put it on, I had trouble getting past the first song. But the whole thing grew on me over time.
-
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Weird vibe for feel-good album of the year, but here we are.
-
The Cure
This album's great and if it means more people go back and rediscover that Bloodflowers is actually really great too then that makes this all the greater.
-
Poppy
POV: You're walking out of a movie in like 2006 and songs from this album are playing over the closing credits. There was probably some weird cyber-action. You're ready to go punch a corporation.

The kids are rediscovering shoegaze? The kids are alright.
