objectively correct list of the 50 best albums ever
in no particular order. almost all metal cuz that's most of what I listen to
-
Gummibär
its peak
-
Fluisteraars
This is a beautiful post black metal album. Simple melodies and good understanding of repetition gets you very far. The vocals are really good as well. The brass instruments are a great addition and fit in perfectly.
-
Profane Order
This album is like the hallmark of war metal. It's a short one, but that gives it even more of a chaotic feel. It's very well produced all things considered while still maintaining that classic excessively reverbed vocal performance
-
Asunojokei
I don't care that it's technically not an album and is actually an EP, this shit is PEAK. This is a release I keep coming back to. It's Asunojokei's first release disregarding their first demo, and it's also before they adopted their more cheerful sound.
-
Taekaury
I fw this album on a spiritual level. Genuinely really good, and I feel like it honestly deserves a spot on this list.
-
MALIKLIYA
This is an almost-black metal album. It's very much post metal though, and goodness me is it beautiful. The vocal performance is definitely the highlight of the album. That singing is ethereal, the singer has a fantastic voice.
-
Mastodon
GIVEN DECISION TO LIVE NOT TAKEN THE FLIGHT TOWARDS LIGHT I'LL STAY IN THE LAVA FOR LIFE ERUPTING WHEN GODS TAKE US ALL CHANGING THE PEAKS MAKES US POUR FROM THE MOUNTAIN AND BURN THE PATH OF OUR TIME
-
Eneferens
Here's some more emotional atmospheric black metal for you. Some real good shit, too. Great clean vocals as well. Fantastic mix, great chord progressions. Beautiful album cover also.
-
Inferi
The riffs.... The god damn RIFFS..... SO SPICY...... ..... . .. .. . . . .GAAAH
-
Hyperion
Pure melodic black metal, it's really good. It's not overpolished and overdramatic like Dimmu Borgir is. Great stuff.
-
Proscription
I love black/death, and this album sorta feels like THE blackened death metal album. The riffs, the drums, everything is quite minimalistic. There aren't any crazy riffs or solos as far as I can remember. It's all about that feel, and it does it so well. It's an absolutely crushing album. The vocal performance is just so fantastic, some of the best vocals I have ever heard, really lifts the album.
-
Stortregn
Outstanding progressive melodeath. Easily some of the best stuff in the genre. The riffs are just so good. It's all about the riffs, the riffs......... SO spicy....
-
Anaerob
This is an insanely underrated album. Instrumental progressive metal. Really, really good stuff. Fantastic riffs, great songwriting. A distinctly urban vibe.
-
Këkht Aräkh
Wandering in the night pale swordsman uaaaaaaah
-
Wind Rose
I don't like power metal all that much but god damn is this album good. Definitely my favorite power metal album. The concept of the album is pretty self explanatory and the sound is about what you'd expect, but they do it really well.
-
Iapetus
This album is an experience. They succeeded very well at making the album extreme but not aggressive. Beautiful riffs. Special mention to the build up to the song The Star of Collapse. It's just fantastic and incredibly satisfying once it hits. The harsh vocals are pretty one-dimensional, with the vocalist essentially doing the same growl the entire album, but I don't know it just works.
-
Panopticon
This is a very emotionally heavy album. Beautiful atmospheric black metal with a distinct country feel. Some real good shit
-
An Abstract Illusion
This is an album I really feel like I should listen to more. But it's also one of those albums that feels really difficult to listen to. It's such a captivating, deep and multi-layered progressive death metal album that it truly just steals your focus.
-
System Of A Down
It's SOAD. This is the standard pick but I really do think it's their best album. Not much else to say than that it's just a fantastic album. Serj's nasal vocals shouldn't work but they just do.
-
Bob Marley & The Wailers
I don't listen to much reggae but I keep coming back to this album. It's just great. I think there's a good reason for why it's such a well-known album.
-
Pensées Nocturnes
Someone has to put a stop to the french. This is circus black metal, and for whatever reason it just works really well. Fantastic vocals spanning from screams to opera-like singing.
-
Infant Annihilator
Okay maybe this album shouldn't be on this list but it truly does hold a special place in my heart. It's just a very fun album to listen to. Completely ridiculous songwriting.
-
Antestor
Regardless of what anyone thinks of the fact that Antestor is an unblack metal band, it's hard to deny just how good this album truly is. It has that classic melodic black metal sound, and it just does it so well.
-
Hands of Despair
Ne Obliviscaris if they were a death metal band. That's meant as a huge compliment, by the way. This is a crazy good progressive death metal album, as is typical of french canadian bands.
-
A Forest Of Stars
This is a strange album. It's like 1800s British aristocrat black metal. It relies heavily on the spoken word vocals, which the vocalist manages to pull off supremely well. The song titles, album title, and lyrics are all strange and comedic and tastefully absurdist. The vocal style, combined with the lyrical denial of life's meaning and heavy usage of death metaphors, makes for a very captivating listening experience. I'm a big fan.
-
Ungfell
Folk black metal. It has a fairly whimsical sound, but it works really well. The high growls are quite goblin-esque which I am a big fan of.
-
Haunter
This is a strangely ethereal and merciless album. And god does it hit just right. The unique and raw mixing and mastering works really well for this album. There is a remixed and remastered version but I prefer the original.
-
White Ward
That saxophone is just so, so tasty. It just works so well, fits right in with the sort of jazz noir post black metal sound they've got going on. Oh and all the other stuff is cool as well I guess
-
Ichiko Aoba
An incredibly beautiful album. Beautiful chord progressions. And oh man are those vocals spectacular.
-
Stormkeep
A WIZAAAAAARD!!!!!!! WANDERER!!!! TRAVELER, SEARCHER, SEER!!!! SOJOURNER, TO THE LANDS BEYOOOOOOOND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Mid-Air Thief
The Beatles if they were good
-
Vemod
Black metal to relax/study to. Atmosphere. Atmosphere. Atmosphere. Excellent use of heavy repetition. Beautiful minimalistic riffs. Fantastic raw sound. It's peak.
-
Ne Obliviscaris
It's a very hard choice picking between Citadel and Portal of I as Ne Obliviscaris' best album, but I'd say Portal of I is just slightly better. Both are really, really good, of course. This is just a fantastic album. It radiates of virtuoso songwriting. The violin works wonders for the sound as well.
-
Slice The Cake
RIP Magero, you absolute genius of a musician. This album is spectacular. It's also very long, at a staggering hour and 17 minutes, but man does it not feel like it. Absolute masterpiece of a concept album. Showcases just how serious and heavy-hitting deathcore can be.
-
Asunojokei
I love asunojokei and I love this album. The vibes are immaculate. Really good post black metal. Very warm sounding, beautiful chord progressions.
-
Gorguts
It's Obscura. This album is mind boggling. If wikipedia is to be trusted then this album was almost completely written by the end of 1993!!!! what the hell???? Incredibly groundbreaking album. Regardless, this is just really good dissodeath.
-
Trouvere Medieval Minstrels
Okay this one may seem a bit out of left field but I'm so serious when I say it's incredibly peak. I just absolutely love the authentic medieval instrumentation. It's so delicious and well written.
-
My personal favorite Opeth album. Yeah that's all I have for this album. It's just really good. I also think the remaster is significantly better than the original master.
-
Xanthochroid
(I count both Act I and Act II as one album for the purposes of this list) There is literally no way I don't also include this album alongside Blessed He With Boils. I personally like Blessed He With Boils a tad bit more than Of Erthe and Axen, but that's comparing masterpiece to masterpiece. This album is even more dynamic and symphonic than Blessed He With Boils is, which I suppose is either a positive or a negative depending on who you ask. It depends on the day for me.
I also just have to mention how absolutely awesome it is that all the song titles in the album make a poem when read in order.
-
Xanthochroid
I found this album when trying to find something to listen to while traveling, and oh man was I unprepared for the levels of peak my eardrums were about to be witness to. The entire band is like one big concept album, a connected story, and you can truly feel the emotion and concept in all their work. Blessed He With Boils is an incredible showcase of just how complex black metal can be. There's a version of the songs on this album on youtube that consists purely of the orchestral instruments and vocals which clearly demonstrates that.
-
Wake
There's something about this album that just makes it so, so good, though I can't really pinpoint it. A part of it is definitely the atmosphere, though. Listening to the album feels like being that person in the album cover. Mourning Dirge (Repose of the Dead) is one of the best songs I have ever listened to and thus deserves special mention.
-
Ulcerate
It would be a crime to not put this album on this list. It's a dissodeath album where you listen to the first 20 seconds of it and you just immediately know it's gonna be fantastic.
-
Artificial Brain
My personal favorite of Artificial Brain's three albums so far. One of the best dissodeath albums I've listened to. Surprisingly beautiful melodies are sprinkled across the album. The vocals are something else, as well. Incredible gutturals, and those few high-growls hit different when they actually appear.
-
Warforged
Genuinely the greatest album ever written. I have never listened to anything like it, and I don't know if I ever will. Maybe some day. It's a Progressive black/death album, one that is quite a difficult listen to be honest. Large chunks of the album consist of minimalist chugging over droning synths. It's an album that grows on you.
-
Krallice
Underrated gem of a Krallice album. My personal favorite of theirs. Fantastic atmosphere. Incredible second-wave BM-inspired riffing, with that trademark Krallice sound added on.
-
Ashenspire
Incredibly powerful vocals and lyrics. You can really feel the frustration and rage. Love the saxophone and violin on this album, it works really well.
-
Madvillain, Madlib, MF DOOM
Fantastic sampling work. I love the beats and melodies used. Doom's flow and lyrical work is obviously spectacular as well.
-
Valdrin
Oh man I love this album. There is something incredibly charming about it. I love the vocals and the lyrics. Truly the epitome of "epic" melodic black metal.
-
Tómarúm
Emotionally heavy-hitting progressive black metal. Great use of repetition. Props to that incredibly sick nasty fretless bass. The incredible album art deserves mention as well.
-
Esoctrilihum
My favorite album from Esoctrilihum. Incredible psychedelic black/death. Brutal, unrelenting blast beats, walls of sound leaving no room to breathe.
