"This album is a little dated. I don’t see some of these songs playing out if made recently. Especially my toot. Is juvenile and a clear feeling people have after being dumped, but not a great way to express it. For an artist who always played himself as an anti-masculine songwriter, it now all comes off as King White Boy energy.
Now let’s go back to the 90’s when this was hipster and cool. The album is very top loaded. All the best songs are there. Lot of fun melodies and vocal harmonies. Ben speaking from the heart all the time, like it or not. Like Alex said, seems very stream on consciousness, but that was the style at the time. The songwriters of the 90’s really went for different approaches to structure.
Brick is just an absolute gut punch right after a string of fun jams. Makes me cry. Getting political, I think it’s crazy when people say “abortion is lazy people birth control” or that people have no problem getting one. It is an extremely hard decision and an extremely brutal procedure. No one should ever “want” one, but thank god we have an option to do it in most places.
Steven’s Last Night Town should be Steve’s theme song, just ignore that they don’t seem to like him. But musically, great theme" - Nick

Front to back
I had a long streak of listening to Ben Folds Five (and Ben Folds' solo stuff). But, Whatever and Ever, Amen captures something about them that no other album did. They weren't super polished yet. It feels like a time and place—a small bar in Chapel Hill.
Evaporated was on repeat back in the day.
