SJO- Bandwagoner
-
Outkast
-
Nick Lowe
He is understating how awesome he is.
-
Arcade Fire
Maybe Funeral instead?
-
Jurassic 5
I loved, loved this album in 2000. Saw them and Blackalicious at RIT around then. Concert was legit.
-
Death Cab For Cutie
I’d like to remove this, but I’ve listened to so much Death Cab.
-
Ben Harper
I spent a lot of time listing to “I’m gonna burn one down”. I know. A little on the nose.
-
Steve Earle
Not normally a top pick from his albums, but the heart wants what the heart wants, and I want this more pop, more rock album
-
Social Distortion
I wish that I was the personification of this album, but I am nowhere near cool enough.
-
Sonic Youth
They have a lot of albums I have not really listened to. Is Dirty not a top album for them?
-
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
Hmmm maybe a cheat. This was ’70s?
-
Rage Against The Machine
Best rap rock ever?
-
Drive-By Truckers
Righteous Path is awesome. I’m sure hardcore fans would pick a different album.
-
I had no idea which album to select here. I think this is the one I know best. They have like 15 decent albums.
-
TV On The Radio
Wolf Like Me is sick a$$ great hit song. Also I need to spend more time with the rest of their catalog. I sort of get stuck on this album.
-
The Specials
It would have been kind of cool to be a rude boy and soccer hooligan in the ’80s…but like not as terribly violent as they were. Among The Thugs is a great book about soccer hooligans. It is disturbing.
-
The Strokes
This is in fact it. You made the list. Be proud.
-
Josh Ritter
This is an emotional pick more than one related to how much I listen to this album or any Josh Ritter. I’ve told you the story about my aunt and him playing her favorite song while she was dying. Fkn solid move.
-
The Notorious B.I.G.
I rarely actually listened to Biggie albums start to finish. But hard to leave off based on how much of him rapping I’ve listened to. I had same issue with Snoop, Dre, PAC, Jay-Z. So this is placeholder for them all. East Coast West Coast all in one.
-
De La Soul
-
MGMT
-
Phoenix
-
Ben Folds Five
Piano=emotion
-
Brandi Carlile
Place holder.
-
Lucinda Williams
D’Angelo is pure sex. Hard stop. But some of Lucinda Williams lyrics challenge for the crown.
-
Sunny Day Real Estate
For a brief time I listened to this and that other SDRE album a lot…and then like never again.
-
Björk
Place holder. Maybe should be Post. Debit? Homogenic?
-
Ani DiFranco
Love this album. Love Ani live. But this does make my testicles hurt because twice at Ani concerts Beth punched me in the crotch. Interesting trivia, she was friendly with the frontman for Soul Coughing in college. They had class together. Soul Coughing also on this list.
-
I love this band. Me and Taylor Swift. One of the many things we have in common.
-
The Sea and Cake
Sam Prekop’s solo stuff is solid. This was a placeholder. Not sure it is my favorite. Have to revisit catalog.
-
Dave Matthews Band
I wish I could not include this but it “slapped” when it came out. I wore this CD out. I saw DMB before this came out or right when it did at Horde Tour maybe (sp?) and just like everyone else in the world I was like “that dude is going to be freakin huge”.
-
Ol' Dirty Bastard
I should probably have like six other solo Wu albums on this list. Raekwon’s Cuban Linx, Giza’s Liquid Swords, some Ghostface album…this list is cluttered already.
-
Rye Coalition
This band rocks if you don’t know them. Check out song Stairway To The Free Bird On The Way to the Smokey Water. Straight fire. I think they may be from New Jersey.
-
Broken Social Scene
If I was cutting back this would probably go. But I love Anthems for A Seventeen Year Old Girl…and 45 yr old dude apparently.
-
Dinosaur Jr.
-
Childish Gambino
Could have gone Camp or Because of the Internet
-
Pixies
Doolittle? Idk, this was recorded for $5 in 25 minutes. Impressive.
-
Bruce Springsteen
This is pure pretentiousness. I listen to the Borns, Edge of Town, and probably others more.
-
Explosions In The Sky
Placeholder…maybe not my favorite.
-
G. Love & Special Sauce
As a Knicks fan I am offended at how much I listened to this album.
-
Kendrick Lamar
Three way tie with Good Kid, Damn, and this album.
-
Built To Spill
Live version of Car is one of my favorite songs of all time. Sort of a cheat though b/c songs from different albums.
-
The Afghan Whigs
I have no idea if this is my favorite Gregg D. related album. I might like Twilight Singers more (sorry Gutter Twins and Mark L.)
-
Elliott Smith
GOAT. Who stabs themselves repeatedly in the chest to commit suicide. Reopen the case! Justice for Elliott!!!
-
Wilco
I know this is controversial
-
Billy Bragg, Wilco
I know this sort of breaks my own arbitrary rule, but this will be my Billy Bragg album
-
The Jazz June
-
The Shins
-
Tame Impala
Place holder
-
Digable Planets
-
Ms. Lauryn Hill
-
Wu-Tang Clan
-
Weezer
On the fence with Pinkerton or this
-
Beastie Boys
Could have picked like four others.
-
A Tribe Called Quest
-
The Roots
-
Paul Simon
-
Talking Heads
-
The Clash
-
Jonathan Richman
Cheat. Best hits album
-
Green Day
-
Vampire Weekend
-
Lyle Lovett
-
The Flaming Lips
-
Beulah
I was super into this album. I feel like it is great indie pop. I thought they were going to blow up. I was wrong.
-
Soul Coughing
-
Jets To Brazil
-
Modest Mouse
-
Minus the Bear
Loved this bands first four albums. Saw live a bunch of times. I think finger tapping guitarist was in Botch, crazy hardcore band. Lead singer was in Sharks Keep Moving.
-
Dr. Dog
-
The War On Drugs
No one agrees with me of loving this album most
-
D'Angelo
Pure, pure sex. So sex it gave him a complex and he had a mental breakdown. That was unfortunate. Especially because it probably had a hand in his dying young.
-
Erykah Badu
Her new album dropped this week. It is great if you like EB.
-
Sigur Rós
Second favorite Icelandic musicians of all time. Best chill album.
-
R.E.M.
-
Black Star
Kind of a cheat b/c I have Mos Def also. So this will be a Talib pick.
-
Mos Def
-
Handsome Boy Modeling School
Underrated album.
-
The Coup
Boots is crazy creative. Sometimes a little too provocative. Worth learning about him. Doing interesting music and movies.
-
J Dilla
Another more emotional pick. J. Dilla was one of best producers in hip hop. He was dying while he made this. It is a top hip hop album, but largely just samples and beats. Literally made it in hospital. I helped his get a bunch of stuff made hen working at Disc Makers. They gave me a copy of the vinyl before the art was on it. Was pretty cool.
-
Madalitso Band
Saw them on TV at Glastonbury a few years ago while in Ireland. Super poppy and fun.
-
Rodrigo y Gabriela
Was a huge fan of the first album and this one.
-
Guru
All the jazzmatazz collab albums have been fun. Guru died early too.
-
Alkaline Trio
-
Bad Religion
-
Blackalicious
One of my favorite rap albums.
-
Deftones
Didn’t know which one I wanted to include. Probably listened to this one the most.
-
Madvillain, Madlib, MF DOOM
This is my MF Doom pick
-
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
As I told Marco, I was big into The Specials…wasn’t a big jump to ska and the bosstones
-
Alabama Shakes
They just dropped a new album. Presumably without that problematic dude. It is pretty good.
-
Interpol
They just dropped a new album also. Feels more pop. I liked it.
-
The Appleseed Cast
Huge fan of this band back in the day.
-
Uncle Tupelo
Sort of a cheat also based on my arbitrary rules
-
Bright Eyes
-
Rocky Votolato
-
J. Cole
-
Mac Miller
I’ve become a huge Mac Miller fan following his death. Listened to some tracks before. Way more into him now. Great lyrics.
-
Amy Winehouse
Love all her music so much. Tragic story. Great voice.
-
M.I.A.
Mixed feelings on including. Hard to separate her and her art
-
Olivia Dean
This should come off but I dig this pop album. I’m excited to see what she does with her career
-
Los Angeles Guitar Quartet
This is largely just on here to cover a genre but also b/c of the Cannon in D version I loved.
-
The Pogues
Huge huge fan. And favorite Xmas song for a long time.
-
Best Coast
Prob should not be included. I like it but not that much. Consider it deleted.
-
Common
My ring tone for Beth is from this album.
-
Kid Cudi
-
Lupe Fiasco
Three Chicago rappers in a row!
-
Red Hot Chili Peppers
-
Pearl Jam
-
Nirvana
-
Radiohead
Get bent all of you. I know your feelings. Beth too. This is the one I like.
-
Robbie Fulks
The titular song is so fun. His catalog is crazy big and diverse. Worth checking out if you haven’t before.
-
The Beaches
I love these ladies. Pop rock at its finest.
-
RJD2
-
DJ Shadow
-
Run The Jewels, El-P, Killer Mike
-
Girl Talk
-
Wolf Parade
I need to venture further into their catalog also. Stalled on this album.
-
Reel Big Fish
It is fun. Great 60 Songs episode that talks about selling out and how that used to be a thing but now it’s just the goal.
-
The Mountain Goats
-
Marah
Thought they were going to be huge
-
311
I wanted this to be the self titled album but couldn’t pull it up. I flippin love this band…even if that is embarrassing.
-
Thursday
-
Band of Horses
Super fun taking Ollie to this show earlier in the year.
-
Sublime
Should be 40 oz to Freedom
-
Grandfather Ridiculous
Bobby McFerrin’a grandson rapping over a harpsichord- hell fkn yes.
-
