My highlights - January 2026!
I now understand why this is a seminal piece of rock history! Amazing album - will be returning to it regularly for sure. Infectiously fun and catchy!

All the albums I've listened to in 2026:
(01/26/2026) It's really good, unsurprisingly! Knew a lot of the big hits from this record, but the whole thing is great as a package. Some really great ear-grabbing bass lines, I love how far up in the mix they are! And Julian Casablancas' voice is just perfect for the sound of this album. Great record!

2001
When Is This It exploded in 2001 it carried a buzz with it that a rock record hadn't generated in quite some time. And the funny thing was that the album is better than the buzz led us to believe. The Strokes made rock music feel effortlessly cool again without sounding nostalgic about it. “Someday,” “Hard to Explain,” and “Barely Legal” are built from incredibly simple parts, but the chemistry between the guitars, rhythm section, and Julian Casablancas’ detached vocals gives everything momentum. What still stands out is the economy of it — no wasted notes, no dramatic gestures, just pure instinct and style.

about me
yes, i am basic, thank you for asking. this is obviously a pretty perfect album but it was also one of the first contemporary indie albums i fell in love with, and one of the few favourite albums i share with my best friend. in high school we knew all the words to "hard to explain" and would start spontaneously singing it at a moment's notice. the nostalgia value is high.

Top 100+1
Leaving just in time
Stay there for a while
Rolling in the ocean, tryin' to catch her eye
Work hard and say it's easy
Do it just to please me
Tomorrow will be different
So I'll pretend I'm leaving

2025 - Week 17: Rob's Listening Log #4
There's a reason I have a painting of this album cover hanging in my living room that I commissioned.

- I listened to this album constantly between my freshman and sophomore years in college, back when all good things were still possible and the future was bright. Ranks right up there with The Bends, Californication, and By The Way for rock albums that capture a specific place in time for me.

Hello
Before going to Best Buy to pick this up I was really afraid that my mom would be mad about the album art, but I was apparently looking at the European release on the internet. This one was fine.
