The fuzzy guitars and raw production give the songs immediate physical force, but the emotional complexity underneath is what lingers. Mitski writes about desire, loneliness, performance, and self-erasure with startling directness. “Townie” and “First Love / Late Spring” sound simultaneously defiant and emotionally trapped. The album captures the exhaustion of wanting connection while fearing what intimacy might expose.

This album has some rock vibes, but is overall a chill, sad album. Good for having it on low volume in the background while doing work (after the first listen-through of course). This album has one of my favourite songs of all time on it, First Love/Late Spring, but I also really like Francis Forever and Last Words of a Shooting Star.
