This is Vampire Weekend at their messiest and most ambitious in years. The album pulls together art-rock, baroque pop, noisy collage, and classic songwriting into something surprisingly emotional and dense. Ezra Koenig’s writing feels less detached and hyper-verbal than in the past, focusing more openly on aging, history, and urban unease. “Capricorn” and “Mary Boone” balance melodic beauty with sonic clutter in fascinating ways. The production constantly threatens to overflow, which gives the album nervous energy. It sounds like a band deliberately resisting smoothness and polish.

First time switching albums with Aggieeeee. The vibe of this album was not what I was expecting but very cutsie very happy. I've never heard of Vampire Weekend so very excited to listen to the rest of their discography. Least favorite is Mary Boone lowkey reminds me of Mrs. Boone from 7th grade girl fuck you for taking my umbrella.

Only God Was Above Us was the album that turned my like of Vampire Weekend into love - for my money, this is one-upping Modern Vampires of the City in every way. The production is far more experimental, the songwriting is stunning, the instrumentals consistently blow me away, it's just amazing. And that's saying a lot considering that album also made this list! The string flourishes at the end of Ice Cream Piano, that show-stopping Sax solo in the backhalf of Classical, the chorus of Capricorn that becomes progressively more abrasive and noisy with huge synth swells, basically everything about The Surfer (those horn embellishments, oh MAN), I could go on and on. Incredible record.

Some tracks on here I liked, but ultimately not my jam. A little too chaotic for me in parts.

Their fifth album is a return to the form of their earlier works, but through the lens of an older/more mature and better (technically) group of musicians. You’ll hear the bass flourishes, the pianos, the familiar drum patterns, and the catchy guitar leads you enjoyed on those early records. But you’ll also hear more orchestral elements, string & horn sections, and jazzy instrumental freak outs that come from more confident songwriters.
