Cat is one of the most immediately groove-oriented Japanese jazz records in your collection. Hiroshi Suzuki’s trombone is the defining voice, but the rhythm section and electric piano give the album a distinctly jazz-funk / soul-jazz character rather than straight hard bop. Tracks such as “Cat,” “Romance” and “Shrimp Dance” lean heavily on repetitive bass patterns and crisp rhythmic figures, while the soloing stays firmly within jazz language.

I’d place it under Jazz → Jazz-Funk / Soul Jazz, with modal and hard-bop elements underneath. It is less harmonically exploratory than Morning Flight and less piano-trio centered than Scenery or Misty; the emphasis here is much more on groove, tone and ensemble feel.

Small review: Cat is almost ridiculously easy to enjoy. The title track locks into a thick bass-and-electric-piano groove immediately, and Suzuki’s trombone gives the music a darker, more muscular lead voice than the saxophone-heavy jazz-funk of the era. “Romance” opens things up melodically, while “Shrimp Dance” is probably the purest expression of the album’s funky side. What makes the record special is that it never feels like jazz players merely “doing funk”: the groove is integral to the composition, and the improvisation grows naturally out of it.
