Keith's Top 40

Not necessarily the best, but a cross section of some of my favorite music. Music that is both important and fun to listen to.

  1. A hard partying rock band grows up and records a double length live(!) album of new material. It's a perfect mix of genres, skillfully performed.

  2. Every song tells a story, most of them gut punches. No one is writing better lyrics these days.

  3. Jaco Pastorius

Bass players know how music works.

  4. John Coltrane

    Such...devotion.

  5. The Roots, the_roots

Black Thought just says it: The number one runner with the number one drummer

  6. Aja
    Steely Dan

You have to appreciate the craft.

  7. Stevie Wonder

Stevie's best songs are spread out across his impossibly fruitful career but if you had to pick one album...

  8. Music school people know, but I'm waiting for the whole world to get hooked on the incredibly musical pop music Theo is making.

  9. Weather Report

I'm too young to have experienced the fusion of, erm, fusion in real time but it must have been exciting. Also, Jaco.

  10. No algorithm could ever invent Vulpeck...the quirkiest low volume funk music around. So casually serious, but all in fun.

  11. The Who

Live albums really test a band's quality. One guitar, one bass, one drum kit = the entire rhythm section for a whole lot of mind-melting, blues-soaked rock.

  12. Maybe nostalgia but it's just weird enough to keep me enjoying it

  13. Miles Davis

  14. Marvin Gaye

  15. Lauryn's a clever lyricist, dynamic singer, and she surrounds herself with talented musicians.

  16. Lake Street Dive

Lake Street Dive was a revelation when I discovered them. If I could, this is the kind of music I'd make.

  17. Kamasi Washington

  18. Joni Mitchell

  19. Joni Mitchell

  20. Jonah Smith

  21. John Scofield

  22. John Mayer, johnmayer

  23. Grateful Dead

  24. Hop Along

  25. George Benson

  26. Fugees, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean

  27. Fleetwood Mac

  28. Dire Straits

  29. The Derek Trucks Band

  30. D'Angelo

  31. Crosby, Stills & Nash

  32. Chick Corea, Return To Forever

  33. Ben Goldberg, Charlie Hunter, Scott Amendola, Ron Miles, …

  34. Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, Art Blakey

  35. Adron
